A must read for anyone struggling with life because of events in their childhood!

Karen does a great job breaking down the importance of understanding the relationship between the problems we have today and the role of the negative relationships we had in our childhood with our siblings.
It seems like things that happened decades ago in our past shouldn't be a problem for us today. However, that isn't the case. Those conflicts we had are still creating problems in our love, work, and friendships now.
Karen moves from showing how these issues show up and how to diagnose which problem you have today are connected to your childhood or not. Finally, she gives a well written straightforward solution for dealing with these "ghosts" from your past.
This is a powerful resource for anyone looking to resolve conflicts from their past that plague them today.

If you are a sibling....read this book!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is an adult still wondering why you don't completely understand why issues arise (and sometimes plague) sibling relationships. Dr. Lewis provides insights that we have missed, growing up in a time when psychotherapy and self-help books try to immerse us in ourselves and/or the shortcomings of our parents. The fact that our sibling relationships greatly shape how we relate to others has been sorely missed--until now. In addition to explaining why this is, Dr. Lewis shows us that our insights can pave the way to new behaviors, relationships, and...indeed....happiness. She does this by laying out how our roles are defined as young siblings and we must learn how to both empower ourselves with those roles, while also resolving the pain they can cause. The time for this book has come. Thank you, Dr. Lewis!

Practical, smart, great reframe

As I read this book, I kept saying, that's me, that's us. I got a different perspective on why my siblings and I relate the way we do, even now as older adults. The book helped soften some of the painful encounters we've had, particularly around the care of our dying parents. Reading this book is helping me put language on why we act the way we do and how I contributed to our problems. I also have new ways to think about framing and breaking up my relationship patterns. I'm feeling optimistic about that. I also liked the sections on how these patterns show up at work and in friendships. Very useful, easy to read, with good stories and clear tips.
