I realized that it isn't like that. I enjoyed reading this book

When I was I kid, I used to think that mind controlling is magic. When I studied Psychology, I realized that it isn't like that. I enjoyed reading this book. I know in myself that I can use persuasion techniques. I'm glad I came across with this book because it serve as a refresher to my course and I love it.

About the Author
Pilar Hernández-Wolfe, PhD, is an educator, researcher, therapist, speaker, author, consultant, and community organizer. She is Associate Professor and Director of the Marriage, Couple and Family Therapy program at Lewis & Clark College. She is past president of the Maryland Association for Counseling and Development (MACD) and board member of the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA). She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) approved supervisor. She has authored or co-authored over forty peer reviewed article and book chapters in English and Spanish.

It is very clearly written and captivating.

This is a complex book with a very innovative proposal for the mental health fields. It takes on the intersections of scholarly work outside of psychology and counseling involving decolonization and borderlands knowledge and integrates it with a general overview of historical trauma and resilience/resistance. It provides an analysis of social justice models and a hopeful and holistic view for next steps in counseling, psychology and family therapy. Although Latinos, Latin Americans, and the Americas are the focus of the work, I feel that its main ideas are applicable to other countries and peoples (i.e. colonization, trauma, healing). It is one of those books that is short and really rewards a careful reading. But most importantly it illuminates how we can put together the larger picture of colonization and decolonization to guide our work in healing in interpersonal relationships. It is very clearly written and captivating. I could not stop once I began reading it!

Not Only What, But Where, Why, and How

Moore tells what each plant is used for, but just as important, he details where and when to find the plant. He gives step by step recipes for each plant, telling if it should be rubbed on, eaten, soaked in, or steeped and drunk. He writes at least two pages on every plant, and some plants have seven pages because they are so useful. The only way to improve this book would be more photos. Every plant is illustrated, but less than half are shown in photos.

fascinating but could be better

I enjoyed reading about western medicinal plants as well as the author's wry humor (I found especially hilarious that comment about the temperature of sitz baths and not wanting to "poach your privates") and obvious expertise. The recipes and directions for making medications out of the plants are outstanding. However, the photography leaves much to be desired. A few of them are blurred and most do not show sufficient detail to enable unequivocal identification. Moreover,the pictures for Yerba Santa and Yerba del lobo are switched in the last page of the color plates. NOT GOOD, if you are using this as a field guide. This then raises the question of, are there other inaccuracies in the book? Definitely check the appearance of the herb you're looking for in another book if you plan to use it.

Medicinal Plants of the Pacific West has been the book I most often refer to when trying to treat a certain ailment or disease.

I came across this book when I attended the California School of Herbal Studies in California. Moore's ability to pinpoint specific uses of herbs, but at the same time his ability to admit to being wrong is what attracts me so much to his herbals (not to mention his humorous and quirky writing style). Fun book

Simply put, this book is gorgeous. Purple is my favorite color so I ordered it for my nana with dementia along with a few others in the series. There are only about 2 sentences per page, and each page has a new picture, like of an animal or scenery that follows the color scheme. The pictures are large and in full color, and the sentences don’t distract from them. This was a fun book for her!

Fun with purple and family!

Personally, I like purple. Not everyone else does, but this book is sure to be a hit with your loved ones as well. The images are so very bright and purple. The lavender fields made her want to go there. She was much more active after this book, and that is simply priceless. We are so glad to have gotten several books from this set. Purple was a lot of fun.

Back to basics

Dawn Walton has set out to provide a clear-cut framework for understanding the distressing and dysfunctional feelings and behaviour which occur for everyone at times in their lives. She uses the conventional cognitive-behavioural paradigm of the three Fs, namely fight, flight, freeze, widely considered primal responses. This approach to understanding individual behaviour is well-worked in the realm of mental health interventions and self-help literature alike. It has the attraction of being understandable at the cognitive level, on which we mostly operate. The author has sought to give it more impact by dichotomising the mind (as conscious and sub-conscious) and vividly depicting the primal responses as the source of “caveman rules”, and dysfunction as conditioned response. This presentation, delivered in the manner of an anecdotal conversation at the kitchen table, will certainly appeal to many potential readers. It is direct and wide-ranging, drawing on and extrapolating from the writer’s life experience. As a wake-up to the possibility of starting to work through uncomfortable aspects of ourselves, it will certainly be useful. And, as with all psychological self-help books, it is important to recognise that some of the issues touched on here (trauma, abuse, suicidal ideation among them) require referral to appropriate and qualified care.

Very informative

I enjoyed reading especially since I couldn't find too much info on the web about a WFPB diet (but lots of info about a vegan diet). I just read T Colin Campbell's book "Whole" and one of his main gripes about his opposition was their 'reductionist' mindset, or trying to hone in on certain macro nutrients like protein and fat and then saying that this food helps with that, but in reality might cause other issues. The author did a great job from a macro nutrient perspective, but she was explaining things from a reductionist perspective, which is what the WFPB diet is not (I.e. It's wholistic). I understand that it's hard to get past that mindset when that's what mainstream scientists do nowadays, but it would have been more refreshing to see a WFPB diet book speak from a wholistic perspective.

With this short book, you will learn concepts of "whole foods", which makes you become more aware of what you are consuming these days. The book raises some common questions that skeptics often ask like "where do you get proteins and calcium from plants". This section is well worth your time to take a look and educate yourself on more opportunities to bring in lean protein and calcium from a plant-based diet. I also like it that Riva asks you to start simple without overwhelming yourself. She suggests starting cooking very simple dishes in the kitchen. Starting small and simple is always a great way to help you get started and generate initial interest.

Very interesting. If I could make a single dietary recommendation to people looking to get healthier, it would be to move to a plant-based diet. I eat and drink dietary supplement before because I want to be healthier and slimmer but when I read this book, I learned that Whole Food Plant-Based Diet are much better than dietary supplement. Actually, I don’t like anything that has vegetables but because I want to be healthy so I start plant-based diet. I’m not going to tell you that everything is going to be easy, but I can tell you that it will be worth it. I highly recommend this book to everyone who are conscious about their health.

I have found Tony's advice on nutrition and diet to be invaluable in life. His approach to food is different to others in that it focuses not just on feeding the physical body but also on how what and how we eat affects us on emotional and other levels. He has given me advice, time and again, that, although simple, has made a big difference to my energy levels and overall well-being. LOVE - WHEN IT ALTERATION FINDS

In this book, journalist Helen Croydon, who admits to being, as she puts it, a "singleton" (i.e., a person, whether in a relationship or not, who insists on retaining the freedoms and flexibie lifestyle unique to unattached single people in society) sets out on a trek to explore the varieties of "unconventional" relationships people have devised to address their needs, wants, and desires.

In 16 chapters, Croydon explores with both the critical eye of a social anthropologist and the wide-eyed curiosity of an eager onlooker, the various permutations of relationships little known or quietly discussed in polite society. Some examples of these relationships are -

1) asexual relationships in which both people have no interest in sex, but in bonding with someone who seeks a non-sexual loving relationship)

2) polyamorous relationships (in one chapter, Croydon relates the experiences she had in Scotland with 17 people --- all but one of them women --- who have managed successfully to forge and maintain over time a strong, loving and sustainable relationship while living together under one roof and sharing responsibilities)

3) Couples who "swing"
4) Couples who live apart (e.g. Croydon interviewed one married couple in which the man lives and works in the UK while his wife lives and works in the Netherlands)

5) Couples devoted to the BDSM lifestyle (which has its own unique categories)

Frankly, I was amazed to learn how people across countries and cultures could manage to live together (or apart) in loving relationships that I had no idea existed or were possible to maintain. Maybe that reflected a certain naivety I've had about relationships. I think Croydon does the reader a service by challenging him/her to rethink the ways society has conditioned people to regard the lifetime relationship (which it promotes on an elaborate scale --- courtesy of novels, magazine articles, TV, and movies --- through "fairytale" notions of love and romance) as the one and only relationship. This book is a keeper, one that I would read again to expand my mind.

Thought-provoking

As a man in his sixties, I didn’t think I was the target reader for this book, but having read it I’m not so sure now. It has made me reconsider my situation. Croydon’s very natural, conversational style makes the book an easy read, so I read it at one sitting.

The fairy tale of the title refers to the blissfully happy monogamous relationships we often feel pressured into seeking, because that’s what society expects of us. Croydon argues that there is no ‘normal’ relationship, and that whatever sort of relationship (or no relationship) we are most comfortable with is normal for us and we shouldn’t feel the need to apologise for rejecting more traditional relationships. In particular, she makes a strong case for the singleton – the person who gets along quite nicely on his or her own without a significant other.

So, maybe I’m just one of life’s natural singletons instead of a sad old duffer with a perfect 100 percent failure rate with women. Maybe I should just embrace my ‘singleness’ and enjoy the advantages.

Reading this book, I constantly found myself nodding and agreeing. This is a story that needs to be told for modern women, presenting an alternative, independent lifestyle, defying traditional expectations of marriage and compromise. Good for you Helen!

What a wonderful and helpful book! This book helped me alot!

This book is perfect for anyone who wants to begin a walking program for health reasons and to lose weight.
In this book there is very helpful information about buying the PROPER WALKING SHOES. I learned much reading this section as I used to use jogging shoes for walking and my feet would hurt later.

Now I am going to shop for the correct type of shoes that will not hurt me feet. And I am taking the author's advice and walking around my home (carpet) to make sure they are comfortable before I wear them out on hard pavements.

Chapter 2 deals with how to get motivated to walk. The listen to music really works for me. In addition, I downloaded my favorite fast music to my phone and this inspires me to walk faster and longer!

Chapter 4 Walking on Treadmill vs Outdoors - this is a superb chapter because it describes benefits of both.

This is a complete book on walking and benefits and I found this book very helpful!

Highly recommend this book!
