Blake Allmendinger is a professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is the author of Imagining the African American West (Nebraska, 2005) and other books. His work on western writers and literature has been featured in the Los Angeles Times.

A Memoir Worth Reading

Blake Allmendinger's memoir takes an honest, often humorous, unflinching look back at an often nightmarish childhood with refreshing acceptance of both the pain and the gifts that one finds along the way in life with an imperfect, dysfunctional family. Blake shares his understanding of a disturbed, abusive, yet talented mother, her impact on him, and the correlating transformation of the small agricultural town where his childhood took place. In well written, familiar prose, this is a fast read that follows the writer's realization that the outward appearance of his family and once thriving town are far from the reality that lay within.

LOVED!

Loved it! A very heartfelt and honest portrayal that many would find difficult to think back upon - much less put on paper. Loved the intertwining of the past (both personal and of the town itself) with the actual current-day trek back "home." One could really "feel" the author's journey - both in the old remembrances and the new discoveries. Bravo!

About the Author
Lita Rawdin Singer, PhD is a professor and psychologist who has traveled extensively and was one of the first female stockbrokers on Wall Street. She earned her BA and MA from California University, Northridge, and her doctorate in Psychology from California Graduate Institute. Dr. Singer lives in Santa Barbara, California. Stephanie Dawn Singer, M.S. (marriage and family therapist Intern #69285) is a biofeedback and neurofeedback therapist specializing in applied psychophysiology. She specializes in mindful cognitive therapy and treatment of the whole person for individuals, couples, families, and children. Brandon Louis Singer is a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. He utilizes the techniques of the Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Treatment Center and Mindful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. His orientation is toward treating the whole person, mind, body, soul and spirit.

A Wonderful Book!!!

An inspirational book for those of us who lean towards being a bit less spiritual and a bit more scientific. Dr. Singer has really worked hard to crack the code on how to let go of feeling sorry for ourselves and move forward to a truly better life by enriching all the experiences around us and letting go of the negative forces that ruin everything for no good reason. This was a great read - and i highly recommend the book to ANYONE who seems stuck in their life.

You deserve better--and this book tells you how to get it!

Here's a book that delivers the goods--the good life and the good way to get there. Clear, succinct and written with the compassion of the heart, Dr. Singer gets the reader back on track. It helps so much to work with thoughts, and make conscious what has been going on without awareness. Dr. Singer makes it easy to understand and approach making the changes that make the difference.

Then working with the tools laid out for the mind/body allows me to be focused on what I can control and riding the top of the waves (the things I can not control). My heart and soul felt lifted and embraced with the way the book brought forward the energy of the Divine. I loved this 360-degree approach and I think you will too. Thank you Dr. Lita Singer--this book is truly a gift!

I was fortunate to be given this book by one of my wife's friends who knows the author. The areas that I was most interested in was how to re-train yourself with reference to "Self -Talk" , specifically how to replace negative self talk with something positive. I loved the quote use is the book , "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf" ! Author, Lita Rawdin Singer uses some basic science approaches to have he reader re-understand how our human emotions work. What I got from reading this book is to learn to grasp the feelings of emotion and work with them for positive outcomes, not negative !

Thank you for writing the book , as the title is very appropriate for those of us that see ourselves as victims in many circumstances.

From healthy foods and building daily habits, this book can get you on the right track to healthier and slimmer life

Interesting book. I liked very much how the author would give you a habit to add to your life, detail it and then give you a reasonable plan of action. Many good things were brought up like having a support system of people to encourage you in your weight lose program. Linda stressed how you need to add just one habit at a time and that developing a habit will take about 14 days. That's practical, because if you try to make too many changes at once, you can become overwhelmed and discouraged and just do nothing. She is right when she says a healthy person is a happier person. I've been in and out of that feeling for years. Some idea's were new and some like drinking 8 glasses of water is one we have all heard, but don't do.

Exactly what I needed to start some new, healthier habits

While I’m not exactly the picture of health, I have always thought that I’m just a few workouts - and perhaps a minor tweak or two in my diet – away from my high school ‘playing’ weight.

But this past Christmas during a friendly game of touch football with the family, I was gassed right from the start. Later on, I felt sick to my stomach after my third piece of pie. And I was sore for a week afterward!

So, with the New Year, I have decided to clean up my act and get back to my ‘playing’ weight.

Healthy Habits has been amazingly helpful! I love the concept – instead of focusing on a few vague suggestions that would disrupt your entire life, this book approaches this topic from the micro perspective. That is, Healthy Habits asks to make several very small changes, so that, when it’s all said and done, I’ve made it to my goals without shocking my system.

Beautifully formatted and laid out, I highly recommend Healthy Habits!

Jim Gourley is an endurance sports journalist whose work appears in various publications and is regularly featured on the website of Foreign Policy Magazine. He is the author of Faster: Demystifying the Science of Triathlon Speed. He lives in El Paso, Texas. Hillary Biscay is the Ultraman World Champion and one of the most prolific iron-distance competitors in the professional women’s racing circuit, having completed over 60 Ironman triathlons. A must read for ultra endurance aficionados!

This is a very insightful look into the history, evolution and inner-workings of Ultraman, as well as its relationship to its more widely know sibling, Ironman. There has been much written (usually in an abbreviated/summary form) about the endurance circus that is Ironman, but until now, no comprehensive in-depth exposé about Ultraman. Gourley presents a thoughtful and relatively balanced explanation of the events that lead up to the current state of ultra endurance competitions, with accurate and compelling descriptions of the Ultraman event itself. Although the focus is on the 2013 Ultraman World Championship race, a sizable portion of the book is devoted to background races and key participants in the ultra community. Anyone who has ever experienced an ultra endurance event will be immediately drawn in and appreciate the care and detail that Gourley includes here. It is well worth the time it takes to read it, and the implications of the issues raised will continue to haunt for days afterwards.

I've never done the Ultraman , dreamt of it plenty of times but never quite got there. This book is a great read , very detailed and intense history of the Ultraman and also a great history of Ironman itself is included when discussing the formation of the ultraman . Discusses the athletes themselves and also the inter-relationships of the founders and present organizers of this great race . Anyone interested in triathlon or endurance athletics would enjoy this book , Recommended !!

Very insightful piece of work. Jim Gourley - as always - did his research here. I have never seen the Ironman early story presented so cohesively, and this will forever be the goto book for Ultraman's early days. I enjoyed it.

    soo many ways to use baking soda. blew my mind

    This book will pretty much tell you everything you possibly need to know about baking soda, so you don't have to rummage through various sources online because it's all found in this book. Yo learn about the chemical breakdown of baking soda, along with all of its many uses some of which you've never heard before I'm sure. My floors are actually pretty dirty in my apartment and I have to move out in tuna half weeks, so I think I'm going to use baking soda for my floors. When use that I never knew before is that you can use baking soda with warm water and applied onto your cuticles. Winter season is really dry, so my cuticles crack up and start to get dry cuts which is really annoying like paper cuts. Turns out that baking soda is very convenient. Most people have baking soda in their house, so this book could be handy in recognizing all of its many uses.

    This book provides a great deal of information in a short treatise on the history, chemical composition, benefits, risks, and the many uses of baking soda. It also includes substitutes for the baking soda if you run out. Very interesting and will certainly try a number of these uses.

    Unlike some of the other books on the market, this book is clearly written by a real doctor who knows her stuff. I learned so much from this book - it makes me want to put my whole family on this 6 week plan and get back to eating healthy so we can sleep better and have more energy.

    I was really disappointed to find that, while some of the information is helpful about the causes of slow metabolism, the way she addresses this issue is counterproductive. For example: the meal plans include eating meat every day, and sometimes twice a day. It also includes a lot of dairy. This is not consistent with what I've been reading regarding how to achieve a balanced and healthy body from sources such as Forks Over Knives and the China Study. Also, for the 6-week plan to work it is required that you buy several supplements, while we know we can get all that we need from eating a healthy whole foods, plant-based diet.
