About the Author
Midwife Kim Pekin takes great joy in helping families with their pregnancies and births. For Kim, being a midwife is a lot more than just being there to catch babies. She feels blessed to be able to help families through the challenges, as well as share in their joys and victories. The families she helps become part of her extended family. Kim is a mother of 7 children herself. After leaving her career as an accountant to stay home and raise her children, she operated her own successful home-based businesses and volunteered as a La Leche League Leader. After her youngest was born at home, she was inspired by the care she received by her midwives, and decided the time was right to become a midwife herself. She enrolled in midwifery school, worked with an experienced midwife who had a busy home birth practice, and was able to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and Virginia Licensed Midwife. She continued to work with her mentor, serving hundreds of families through their birth center, which she co-founded in 2011. Now, through Birth Outside the Box, she has returned to her roots as a home birth midwife and is serving her community, helping families have the care she valued so much as a mother herself. Kim is deeply committed to giving back to the midwifery community so midwives can continue their work to help families who choose home births. Nationally, serves on the Board of Directors for the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), the organization that sets the standards for the CPM credential. Locally, she serves on the Virginia Midwifery Advisory Board, and on the Board of the Virginia Midwives Alliance. She is a member of the NACPM and MANA. In addition, she is a co-founder and part of the leadership team of the Healthy Mothers Healthy Birth Initiative, a multi-disciplinary organization whose mission is to reduce domestic maternal mortality. As a midwife, Kim believes it is of the utmost importance to ensure that birth is a peaceful and gentle transition for a child to enter the world. She believes birth sets the tone and creates the context for a person’s entire life experience, and that an important part of the midwife’s job is to honor the baby’s journey, respecting his need for gentle handling, and helping him to bond with his parents and siblings. It is her great honor to be present at the moment a baby is born, to witness his or her discovery of the world, and to watch as the baby and family fall deeply in love with each other.

Excellent & informative. A must read for those interested in birthing outside of the hospital or for those who need to convince family & friends that their decision is not totally crazy. I would definitely recommend this book.
