The patients’ stories are the most affecting part of this remarkable book, but they gain force from our growing sense of the place, the hospice, in which they are heard. The author, who volunteered at the facility, artfully weaves together other portraits, of family, friends, caregivers, with her own journal entries, seemingly casual but ever-resonant. The Way to Go is ingenious in design and powerful in effect, a book that gently compels meditation on ultimate things.

A must read for the interminably ill and the elderly

This is an extremely well, and clearly, written, and thoroughly researched book that carries a critical message about coming to terms with death when death seems imminent. A MUST read for the elderly (like myself and my wife) or others who have what seem like interminable illnesses, and their loved ones as well. Thanks to the author so much for such a pragmatic, but also uplifting perspective on such a dread topic.

A beautiful reassuring book

Dealing with the difficult subject of how end of life care can alleviate fear and suffering, Pritchard’s portraits of the people involved in a small Massachusetts hospice (residents, families and staff) can calm some of our fears of our inevitable end. Vivid garden photos add to the serenity of the book and her diary excerpts as a volunteer draw usin to everyday hospice life.
