Beginning at a young age Joey Lott experienced intensifying anxiety. For several decades he lived with restrictive eating disorders, obsessions, compulsions, and an inescapable fear. By the time he was 30 years old he was physically sick, emotionally volatile, and mentally obsessed with keeping any and all unwanted thoughts and experiences at bay.

At this time Lott was living on a futon mattress in a tiny cabin in the woods. He was so sick that he could barely move. He was deeply depressed and hopeless. All this despite doing all the "right" things such as years of meditation, yoga, various "perfect" diets, clean air, and pure water.

Just when things were at their most dire, a crack appeared in the conceptual world that had formerly been mistaken for reality. By peering into this crack and underneath all the assumptions that had been unquestioned up to that moment, Lott began a great undoing. The revelation of this undoing is that reality is utterly simple, ever-present, seamless, and indivisible.

The Problem with The Problem with Paleo.

Full disclosure: I subscribed to Mark Sisson's Daily Apple about a year ago. I do not agree with everything he advocates, however, I am familiar with his arguments, his approach and his version of paleo.

I have been looking for someone on the "anti-paleo" that is as well written and well researched as Mark's site, when I saw Joey's book, I bought it to see if it lived up to its cover. But, as some of my co-reviewers have stated, this is not only just his opinion, it's riddled with misinformation and incorrect facts, ones that I can point out in a simple review.
He singles out Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint for particular ire. He says, "...I found The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson, which is ... one of the most popular books on `paleo.' Sisson differentiates primal from paleo by supposedly taking a more progressive, open-minded view of health and nutrition than paleo. But ultimately he makes a stronger case against grains, dairy, and carbohydrates then just about anyone else."

Two major flaws with this... one is that Mark Sisson actually says the total opposite to this. If Joey was truly following the "Primal Blueprint", he would have known about the 80/20 rule, which you can read an excerpt here: "...you're undoubtedly shaping the Blueprint to your life, using the principles but adapting the particulars to your own circumstances and tastes. The next gross error in Joey's book is a whopper... As you see above, he says that the Primal Blueprint bans dairy, but that is not the case. Read this from Mark's site: "...Dairy, on the other hand, is a relatively recent food chronologically, but it is most assuredly and obviously a viable nutritive source in its raw form. It's full of highly bioavailable saturated fat, protein, and carbs - in equal portions." Mark actually places dairy in the grey area, and says that you need to experiment with it. So with these two glaring errors, Joey goes on to say this: "...I'm not the only one who took it too far and turned it into an eating disorder, doing injury to myself in my zealotry" Wow... so what diet was Joey really following? Not a primal one. Again, this is all Joey's opinion, as there is not one footnote for all the "research" that Joey claims to have done, and now, his opinion is that his own fanatical version of paleo didn't work.

He then states that he now has found "...eating what I desire or what my body feels that it needs tends to be much more healthful then eating what I think I should eat." Excuse me? His next nugget is, "... in many ways, my present diet isn't terribly at odds with paleo ideas." So why, pray tell, are you writing this?!?

He then goes on to repeat a common "straw man" debunking of paleo, using the tired argument saying nobody knows exactly what our ancestors ate and they think they ate many different things so there is no one true paleo diet. (This was popularized by a TED talk, here: http://youtu.be/BMOjVYgYaG8 ) So because of this, the whole paleo movement is based on a fantasy.

So then why would Mark say this? "First, that we don't know what our ancestors were truly eating. Second, that there wasn't just one paleo diet. Third, that even if we could know exactly what our ancestors were eating, it doesn't mean those foods were the ideal foods; they were trying to eat whatever was available, not whatever was most nutritious or synergistic with their genome."

Then Joey tries to argue that grains aren't as bad for you as paleo suggests but does he eat them? Not so much. Apart from when he craves them. Reference the 80/20 rule above.

And the final whopper of an error in Joey's book... he states "Paleo gurus like Mark Sisson have all but declared war on insulin. Sisson advises in his Primal Blueprint that we should eat between 50 and 100 grams of carbohydrates per day (or maybe less) so that we can "minimize insulin production" because in his view, insulin is bad."

What does Mark say? He says: "Insulin was one of the first hormones to evolve in living things. Virtually all animals secrete insulin as a means of storing excess nutrients. " Read more: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/diabetes/#ixzz3Sbj823SH

Does that sound like he is saying insulin is "bad"? What Mark identifies and says is bad is that if we eat too many carbohydrates or sugar, that too much insulin is produced, and your cells will develop an "insulin resistance". That is what he identifies as bad, but nowhere does Joey talk about this.
Mark also recommends around 150g of carbs to maintain your body weight, or if you want to lose weight, then try between 50-100g of carbs, but he certainly does not recommend going lower than that for any length of time. So while Mark's site is fairly well researched, lots of links to different studies, and tons of real life examples, Joey book has no links, only a few quotes, and he says things like:
"Whether or not this claim is true, I cannot validate.",
"...I do not know a single study that demonstrates that happening.",
"Which might mean that that phytic acid isn't as big of a deal as it's been made out to be.",
"I don't think ketosis seems to be the preferred state for the body.",
"Does diet matter? Probably.",
"Admittedly, nutritional deficiencies on an inclusive paleo diet will probably be few.",
"I'd wager that it happens often on a paleo diet then most people are aware.",
And the classic gold star advice of "Sure, anyone who genuinely has a problem with a particular food *should probably* avoid that food for as long as they have a problem with it."... Really? Only "probably avoid"? C'mon Joey... any others? Yes!
"In the end, as in the beginning, I don't care what you eat."

Brilliant!

At the end of the day, Joey reminds me of that expert sitting at your local pub, the one that knows everything about everything, doling out advice to all who will listen, and is always sitting in the same spot... so then how does he get all his information? CNN of course!!

Paleo is over the author's head

I follow the paleo lifestyle but always like to get a variety of information, opinions, experiences, and feedback to keep myself honest. I was excited to read this, especially when the author starts off by saying he doesn't advocate any particular diet.

I was turned off immediately by the unprofessional and obvious disdain the author has for paleo "gurus" and whom he seems to view as zealots. In fact, I believe it is the author himself who is obsessive to a fault regarding "diet" ideals, having struggled first with veganism and then with "following paleo to a T" without success.

Therein lies the problem. Paleo is a lifestyle designed to be flexible and adaptable to individual needs.

The author goes on to describe how various paleo gurus demonize all sorts of foods and basically create a militant diet. Most of which isn't true, and if the author followed what he created as his own "paleo diet" to the T expecting success, I can see why he came out bitter. Which is what this book is to me - a misrepresentation of paleo and bitter cherry-picked representations of the paleo philosophy.

All of the misinformation he quoted from well-known paleo sources is easily verified. For example, white rice and potatoes are good foods to eat, not shunned. Paleo is not a low carb diet. Paleo is not keto.

Merely an opinion with no documentation or references

The author makes all sorts of claims with absolutely no documentation or references. So as far as I'm concerned this is just his opinion with nothing to back it up.
