Practical, Spiritual Advice That WORKS

Ahh the headaches this would have saved me if I had this in my tool belt years ago! The simple but comprehensive 5-step framework is super helpful. It gets right to the core of what matters and what affects us most in these situations.

The advice hits at an intersection of spiritual and practical, giving you what you need to move forward in a positive light. The "spiritual" element isn't a pat-on-the-back and you're all set or sit in meditation for five hours a day until you see the beauty in life.. It's just exercises, practices, and ways of thinking that *work* and put you in a much better place than when you started reading.

And finally, my favorite line of the book is "egos (and other things) deflate". You'll have to read and find that part to know exactly what it's all about :) .

It looks like they're going to have to re-think the old saying ...

Well, color me surprised. It looks like they're going to have to re-think the old saying about not being able to teach an old dog new tricks, because I sure have learned a few new ones from reading this book.

This young lady has done a remarkable job of taking a very complicated subject, and presenting us with a fresh re-framing of things that we either take for granted, or just flat out don't (or won't) think about.

Most books on this subject, that I have seen, are either all fluff and nonsense, or they're a shameful bashing of the opposite sex that appear to be written as some sort of catharsis for the author. Not so, with this one. This is a simple, straightforward and insightful primer that will help clear the cobwebs and provide even the most jaded reader with a fresh perspective on a healthy approach to relationships that can't help but leave you more open to the possibility of one that is healthier and more satisfying.

Kudos, Emily Rose. Well Done!

Bad Love Habits Begone

First, let me say that this is a time where I wish Amazon had 1/2 stars in their ratings, since I'd give this book 4 1/2 stars. I didn't want to go the route of just giving it five stars, but it is deserving of more than a simply 4. Now that's out of the way, let's get into the review, shall we?

I've read more than my share of relationship books in my half decade of living. To understand the female mind and desires, to understand my own and to try to navigate the sometimes perilous journey of finding, building, struggling, failing, succeeding and sometimes heartache that makeup relationships. I've read the usual suspects "Men are from Mars, Women are From Venus", "The Five Love Languages", etc. and have gleaned useful advice from each. I picked up this book to try to learn any remaining bad love habits that remain. I was married for about 12 years and have been single now for 13 years from that point. I've dated some, but wanted to focus on my kids until they were grown, which they are now. I'm at a stage where new relationships and dating are moving in front now in my life. Reading this book was a way to help me explore any habits that remain, even after years and work to relate to others better and more vulnerably.

Emily Rose, a relationship and self-actualization coach wrote "Break Your Bad Love Habits" from her personal experiences that culminated in a heartbreaking end of a relationship in 2007. She also leverages the experiences of clients from her coaching business. The book is made up of five steps to help you break these bad habits:

Step 1 - Reclaim Joy
Step 2 - Shift Your Perspective
Step 3 - Clear the Past
Step 4 - Receive Love
Step 5 - Manifest Consciously

Each of these steps aim to move you systematically from wallowing in self-pity and being "stuck" to a place of vulnerable freedom, so that you can have empowering, enriching and positive relationships in the future. One might think this is only for relationships with the opposite sex, but nothing could be further from the truth. The steps will help you break bad love habits with those of your same sex too!

When dealing with relationships most people focus on the other person, but truly to have a healthy relationship you have to know and have worked on yourself before you can give yourself to another. Most people move from a breakup to another relationship without accessing what happened and what areas and thoughts in their own lives they need to change before starting in another relationship. Those who don't do this will face the endless cycle of getting into the same bad relationships and breakup is inevitable.

Step 1 is a journey to knowing yourself. A quote from the book sums the reason for this up best. "Getting to know an love another person can be pleasant, lovely and sometimes even euphoric. Yet getting to know an love one's self can be painful, dark, and sometimes downright ugly. But, it must be done in order to heal wounds, neutralize emotional triggers, and cease undesirable patterns." At this point you'll begin using the free, downloadable workbook to work through a variety of exercises about yourself and soon others. The combination of reading and writing, if done openly and with vulnerability will be a life-break through that will help you for the rest of your life and relationships!

Of note, I didn't like the first exercises, since it made me focus on myself. While I've done a lot of read, working through exercises, been to counseling, been to seminars and so on, this evaluation of myself can be painful. Necessary for sure, but it's still painful. I don't say this to scare you off, rather to bring reality that it's better to face yourself, your bad habits and change them, rather than go through the "head in the sand" approach and painful breakups that haven't worked so far. Sorry that I digressed a little, but suffice it to say, those who do the work will come out ahead personally and relationally, so DO THE WORK! :-)

Step 3 was another reminder and beneficial step for me, as I've gone through "clearing the past", but sometimes time passes and you accumulate additional negative things that need to be identified and removed. Another part of this step is learning to set healthy boundaries. One area of this chapter is on identifying and handling unwanted sexual attention. I can't say, as a man, that I've had this occur in my life, but reading this chapter was beneficial as a father of a teenage daughter. Further, it helped me be more aware of my own conversations and cues with others, so that they aren't objectified or uncomfortable. It's a chapter that regardless of if you're a man or woman you need to read and not just glass over.

Step 4 - the discussion of love-drug dealer and love-drug addict will hit home for so many people, as you may fall in and out of the rolls and even have combinations of them. When this "love drug" is used by either role it can lead to unhealthy behaviors and just as street drugs can alter the state of a person, so too can the rush of chemicals in the "love drug". One big takeaway from this step is the mantra to prevent the "love drug" from clouding your thoughts with fantasy. The mantra "I let him show me who he is. I let him show me who he is. I let him show me who he is" if you're a woman or "I let her show me who she is. I let her show me who she is. I let her show me who she is" if you're a man is powerful. See, so often we gloss over, good or bad, who a person is. Emily Rose explains that this mantra, said when you notice your thoughts leaping into "future fantasy-mode" will help keep you grounded in the moment and see all they're offering and not offering. When you really get your head and heart wrapped around this it will change your life, your relationships and mind.

The finally step will help you to consciously live life being fully you. I won't go into detail, but it's the culmination of the book and the beginning of a new, healthy you. If you've put the work in, then you'll be ready to pursue a relationship of be a better participant in your current marriage or relationship.

Finally, Ms. Rose provides a meaty bonus section with full sections on "not losing yourself in relationships", "on fights", " on being supportive", and even "on getting ready to bail" among others. These tips will be of benefit for women to be sure, but us guys can find help in them too!
